It was a perfect day for sledding!
We had a wonderful time sledding today. The students were laughing, tumbling, smiling and sliding in the warm sun! My thanks to Mrs. Hambelton, Mrs. Sargent, Mrs. Filipov and Mr. Jorgensen for joining us today. Just think, if the snow holds, we will be snowshoeing next Monday.

Sticking Out Our Necks For Others
We continue our focus on kindness, caring and anti-bullying behaviors throughout our school community. We discussed the book, Big Al, and thought about the differences between physical appearance and a person's actions and which are more important in judging a person's actions. The book was a great focus for our discussion. Please let me know if you would like to read it at home. I am happy to share.
Valentines Day!
We had a delightful Valentines Day celebration! We enjoyed opening our cards together and reading the sayings and riddles. After, we spent time completing word searches, crossword puzzles and dot to dots.
Jump-A-Thon-Fun!
We had a fabulous time at the jump-a-thon! Ms. McCue set up 5 jumping stations for us! Thank you for supporting this community service event.

As most of you probably know by now, our District has recently adopted and implemented the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. In an effort to reach out to Cutler Parents we would like to invite you to attend an informal parent coffee on Friday, March 8th from 9:00am to 10:00am. Both Dolly McIlvaine, School Counselor and Jenn Clifford, Principal will be available to answer any questions about the implementation of this program at Cutler school as well as have a conversation about how parents can best support their children when you hear about bullying behavior.
In addition, if you were not able to attend our parent information night in January, you may view the meeting on our website. The video is in the 'Links', identified as the Olweus Parent Forum. |

Olweus Anti Bullying Prgram
This week, we held our 3rd class meeting focused on the four anti-bullying rules. Our discussion focused on Rule #2-We will try to help students who are bullied. We shared our ideas about how we could help someone we felt was being bullied or left out of a group. The discussion emphasized the importance of doing something rather than just being a silent bystander. The message is that each of us can make a difference in a situation by being kind and sticking out our necks for a friend. We read the book, Big Al, and talked about how people sometimes leave someone out because they act or appear different and how the a person must always be judged on his/her actions. Please let me know if you would like to borrow this book to share with your family. This week, we will discuss Rule #3 We will try to include students who are left out."

A Great Article-Seasons of A Classroom
February—Digging In
Chip Wood on February 3, 2012
Days have begun to have more daylight, the hint of spring to come. But in school, days often seem longer in February to students and teachers. A tedium can come with drab days, unpredictable weather, too much indoor recess and the flu. What to do?
Nestle in. Productive elementary classrooms at any grade level in February can take on the sensibility of rabbits snuggled in their burrows, or mice nibbling away at their store of tasty seeds.
The routines and schedules and ways of working together developed in the months of harvesting and storing of skills and habits now provide comfort to young learners and their teachers. Read-alouds can go a little longer, be woven into the fabric of ELA pacing charts, delight the listener with a continuity of something to look forward to in school tomorrow. Planting seed or bulbs in small pots of washed gravel brings the delight of observing and measuring and comparing changes that can occur in a sunny window, while outside crocuses begin to appear—or a foot of snow blankets the ground, depending on your location.
Valentine’s Day diverts but opens the opportunity for flurries of writing at every grade level and the preservation of children’s good heartedness with notes for the office secretary and the principal and the custodian and the cooks in the cafeteria. And there are other February traditions of African American History Month, Presidents Day, and, of course, Groundhogs Day … Did the groundhog see his shadow? How much more winter will we have?
February is a good month for taking stock. What and how much have we learned this school year so far? We are halfway through, how much more is there to do? We have crossed the school equator this month, or last, magically marked by the number line reaching the 100th day. Collections of hundreds appear everywhere. Are there a hundred children in our grade? What does it mean to get 100% on your paper? What would you do with $100 dollars?
Digging into some research, digging into harder spelling, making a big jump toward knowing all your times tables or counting to 100 by 2’s. Finding time to think about what you are doing, what you are learning and what you now can do on your own. Reflection. Remembering. Maybe having the days feel long in February can be kind of cozy and comforting.
Field Trip- February 27th
The children will bring home a permission slip for our trip to the Ipswich Sanctuary on Wednesday, February 27th. We will be participating in the Sugaring Off program. It is a wonderful way to continue our year long study of trees and learn about a local product. Please return the slip as soon as possible so I can complete all the paperwork prior to February vacation.
Jump Rope For Heart
On Monday, February 11th, the students will be participating in the Jump For Heart community service program. The children will bring home some information on the program and OPTIONAL fundraising on Tuesday. Everyone is invited to come and join us jump! So if you can, join us on Monday, February 11th at 1:05 to jump, twirl or cheer!
